Jr.: Nonlinear Analysis of the Space Shuttle Superlightweight External Fuel Tank

چکیده
Results of linear bifurcation and nonlinear analyses of the Space Shuttle superlightweight (SLWT) external liquid-oxygen (LO 2) tank for an important early booster ascent loading condition are presented. These results for thin-walled linear elastic shells that are subjected to combined mechanical and thermal loads illustrate an important type of response mode that may be encountered in the design of other liquid-fuel launch vehicles. Linear bifurcation analyses are presented that predict several nearly equal eigenvalues that correspond to local buckling modes in the forward ogive section of the LO 2 tank. In contrast, the nonlinear response phenomenon is shown to consist of short-wavelength bending deformations in the forward ogive and barrel sections of the LO 2 tank that grow in amplitude in a stable manner with increasing load. Imperfection sensitivity analyses are presented that show that the presence of several nearly equal eigenvalues does not lead to a premature general instability mode for the forward ogive section. For the linear bifurcation and nonlinear analyses, the results show that accurate predictions of the response of the shell generally require a large-scale, high-fidelity finite-element model. Results are also presented that show that the SLWT LO 2 tank can support loads in excess of approximately 2.6 times the values of the operational loads considered.

Multidisciplinary Design Optimization of the Space Shuttle External Tank
This study explored the multidisciplinary system design optimization of the External Fuel Tank of the SpaceTransportation-System. Initially, we used the return on investment as the single objective of the system. With the simplified external tank model, a series of simulation experiments were conducted to obtain the feasible starting design. We then performed the single objective optimization u...
متن کاملEvaluation of Ice and Frost Accumulation on the Space Shuttle External Tank
Ice/frost formation on the Space Shuttle cryogenic propel 1 ant tanks presents a different problem from that of past launch vehicles. Lift off weight addition has been the primary concern on past launch vehicles. The primary ice/frost concern on the Shuttle vehicle is damage to the Orbiter Thermal Protection System due to ice/frost impact. The approach used to arrive at a solution to this uni ...
متن کاملSpace Shuttle Transportation (Roll-Out) Loads Diagnostics
The Space Transportation System (STS) consists of three primary components; an Orbiter Vehicle, an External Fuel Tank, and two Solid Rocket Boosters. The Orbiter Vehicle and Solid Rocket Boosters are reusable components, and as such, they are susceptible to durability issues. Recently, the fatigue load spectra for these components have been updated to include load histories acquired during the ...
متن کاملThermal Time Constant Measurements for Ge Film, GaAs Thermometers at Low Temperatures
In this experiment, thermal time constant measurements were taken from a system consisting of a heater, He gas, and a sensitive, low temperature resistance thermometer. The resistance thermometer [3] was made of a Ge film deposited on a GaAs substrate. The data from this experiment will be used to design a mass measurement system for hydrogen storage tanks in micro-gravity environments. INTRODU...
متن کاملPreliminary Study Using Forward Reaction Control System Jets During Space Shuttle Entry
Failure or degradation of the flight control system, or hull damage, can lead to loss of vehicle control during entry. Possible failure scenarios are debris impact and wing damage that could result in a large aerodynamic asymmetry which cannot be trimmed out without additional yaw control. Currently the space shuttle uses aerodynamic control surfaces and Reaction Control System jets to control ...
